Barbara Soares

"My style of bold color and photo/graphic design is derived in part from my experience in art therapy, transformational energy and reiki healing. My work of the past 35 years has been done as a zen meditation in seeing, photographing and printing images as 'visual haiku' that challenge the viewer to perceive the world in a different light and composition.

"Passion, resonance, shadow and light, form and movement, essence of the moment, essence of the heart—these are the raw materials I draw from and live for," says Barbara Soares.

Barbara (Bobbi) Soares, MA, CYT, is a yoga and vocal yoga teacher, blues/jazz singer, Reiki master and fine art photographer certified in several modalities of energy and sound healing.  She offers Hummingbird Sound Yoga Workshops and Humming for Health, using vocal toning/chant, breath work and yoga to help individuals find and free their voice to improve vocal confidence, reduce stress and relax.

Her art work has been shown in galleries, schools, and alternate spaces in New York City, Connecticut and Westchester, including the Mattatuck Museum, Canton Artists Guild, Silvermine Guild Arts Center, Carriage Barn Arts Center, Washington Art Association and the Atrium Gallery of the Warner Theatre.  She has studied with Erica Steinberger, John Paul Caponigro, Tillman Crane and Alberto Villoldo.    Her artwork is in private and public collections in the Northeast, CA and FL.

She holds an MA in Integrative Health and Healing from the Graduate Institute, with undergraduate training in creative arts expression from The New School and Pratt Institute. Certified by the NY Integrative Sound and Music Institute in Sound Healing Arts, Barbara also holds an AB in Chemistry from Barnard College where her study of quantum mechanics, particle theory and comparative religion provided her with a strong foundation for her energy work and belief that we are all connected: our body is a complex equation of vibrating, rotating and translational energy.

Her internship in creative arts therapy at the DiMele Institute involved running workshops in primal sound, toning, art, poetry and movement. A long-distance swimmer, she continues to utilize these modalities as well as yoga, singing and meditation for self healing (Chronic Lyme and recently diagnosed Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos).

Barbara's band Hummingbird and Friends is well known for their eclectic blend of chants, jazz, blues, rock and country.  She has studied vocal improvisation with Bobby McFerrin, Vocal Yoga with Heather Lyle, and overtone chanting with Jill Purce.
